Buddhist Retreats for integrating awareness and contemplative practice
Women’s Retreats in nature
I take small groups and individuals on contemplative adventures and solo immersions in nature, with limited access to technology, lasting anywhere from one day to twelve days.
You can choose different places to stay, from camping to catered, from indoor retreat centres to the wilds.
I offer custom designed wilderness programmes in Europe and UK for set groups - or with set themes. These commissioned programmes are designed with you and can form part of a wider programme of mentoring sessions.
Ecological Self: who or what needs change?
Reconnecting to a view of the world that came so naturally to many of our ancestors might be challenging, but if we are to adapt to ecological change, it’s vital we learn to see the universe as full of alive dynamic presences and to rediscover the sense that to be human is to be part of nature.
Buddhist teachings on interconnectedness aim to create a profound shift in our sense of identity, transforming it from one that is isolated and separate to one that is deeply rooted in relationship and connection with others, and the world around us.
True social and environmental change relies on this.
Re-experiencing ourselves as part of nature: how does Animism fit in with this?
The principle of animism which is the possibility that everything might be alive underpins much of my work.
Concepts and ideas ‘about’ will only take us so far. What I call Embodied Animism which is by its nature relational and somatic, explores how we might experience reciprocity beyond thoughts and concepts.
My approach embraces reciprocal and relational processes which see personal development and therapy as part of a broader context that includes nature as a whole. By understanding these elements in relation to one another, we can foster a dynamic connection to our surroundings and ourselves.
How does self-transcendence relate to all this?
Self-transcendence - a state of being in which a person ceases to feel separate from the environment in which they exist - is a fundamental aspect of rites of passage and nature-based immersions.
By focusing solely on personal self-development, psychology, and improved leadership skills, we inadvertently limit our exploration and understanding. These secular/ rational approaches keep our inquiry restricted, preventing us from reaching deeper connections and broader insights that can emerge from embracing the full potential of these experiences.
To give an historic example of this kind of narrowing of perception, during the Renaissance, the idea of genius shifted from being a divine spark to a personal trait. People began to refer to artists as ‘being’ a genius rather than ‘having a visitation’ from genius.
This limits ‘the conversation’ to a kind of monologue that human beings are having with themselves. If we really want to move beyond dead-end stories I suggest we open up the conversation and start ‘talking to the neighbours’.
Languaging these experiences of self-transcendence - when we connect with something more than our isolated individual selves - is undoubtedly tricky. Spirituality is often a loaded term. Being open to conversations between body, land and soul is my current personal preference for speaking about this territory.
“I had the pleasure to be guided through my vision quest by Natasha and coached thereafter. My highest recommendations go to Natasha as a vision quest leader and a coach. A wise woman at home in the wilds.”
- Christoph Jünger
Executive Director Austrian Committee for UNICEF
“The vision quest has been the most profound and intense experience I’ve had in my life. The feeling
that remains is one of deep gratitude for what you
have offered me. I have such respect for the wisdom you shared with us. I got in touch with something
that is so important and so helpful to the world and
to us, especially in the West, or however you want to name this. I still feel it in my heart. If you have the chance to make it to such a quest then I strongly recommend doing it with Natasha.”
- Christoph Cambeis
Teacher
“Natasha (and Werner) held every single person in
the group so deeply in mind, and not only accepted, but celebrated and nurtured difference and diversity - so that everyone's experience was allowed to flow
and generate at its own pace, without judgement.
They are people who lead from their intuition and heart and are not afraid to bring passion and
sensuality in their work, and inspire this in others. I was humbled by the generosity of how much they
gave of themselves throughout the whole process.
They are also people who live their wilderness
practice, which inspires a deep sense of trust.”
- Chloé Dyson
Director of the insight and strategy Lab at TCO London,
“I was rewarded with something I didn't realise I needed - the ability to discover, and embrace, my emotional 'body'. To go from denying emotion at
Day 1 to expressing it openly from day 2 for the rest
of my time was a big step.”
- Vic
Ex-Marine
“I wanted to find ways to connect to nature because I want to invite others to connect to nature. I didn’t think I could do this and be authentic without having experiencing this myself. I could only go so far on my own; going for a walk, a bit of mindfulness, listening to the birds… I wanted to connect on a deeper level.”
- Simone Dill
Founder of Back on Track
“I’ve not had the opportunity to do this before and the 24 hour solo time in nature was really an incredible experience for me. I liked the idea of being without distractions and to be able to pay attention to the life and nature evolving and changing around me throughout the day.
I’m taking back more lightness of being, friendship, and a deeper connection with myself.”
- Marc J Francis
